Southwestern Academy Honors, Graduation Live and by ZOOM

HONORS, GRADUATION LIVE AND BY ZOOM
Our 96th Commencement program, honoring the eighth and twelfth grade graduates and high achieving students at all levels, was held at our San Marino Campus as usual on the first Thursday in June. It was of course unusual this year of a global pandemic as our first (and I hope only) graduation with students and families scattered to four continents. Those students and faculty who remained studying on campus gathered together in Lincoln Hall, scene of the first Southwestern graduation in June 1925.
Zoom helped unite us, yet not as warm as gathering on campus to celebrate high achievements by many students, and to cheer the Class of 2020 as they move on to university studies, careers, and successful lives. Our students already missed too many other traditions, such as the mid-May Luau and Sports Awards, the Memorial Day track and field meet, and the Prom for all high school that was to be a dinner-dance aboard a yacht in Newport Harbor.
We miss especially time for hugs and kisses and tears of farewell as we gathered for the programs and a buffet lunch the last time together. Next year this class is invited to join the 2021 Prom and graduation, a time to move 2020 tassels and throw the red caps in the air, as our alumni remain always a part of our Southwestern Family.
Summer session opened this week on schedule, and those in Media Arts class have prepared a video of our hour of awards, honors, the Tradition of the Axe promoting 8th graders from Middle to High School, and of course diplomas and congratulations to the graduating Class of 2020. Given our inexperience, it’s not a polished video, but it is full of our pride and love from our trustees. faculty, and staff to all students in concluding this strange and difficult school year.
Here is the link to the Graduation video. Enjoy!
