Southwestern Academy’s STEAMER/STEM program was buoyed by our annual Science Fair. The day before a long Christmas Break (December 16 to January 16) students worked tirelessly to design their Rube Goldberg Projects with glue guns in hand, while others created elaborate science board displays. The Science Department worked late most evenings in preparation for the fair to ensure all would go well. Southwestern had the help of eight judges on campus to review science fair projects. The overall feeling from judges was good. Judge, Mr. Charles Rasmussen commented, “The level and quality of work this year is much better.” Retired and well-respected teacher, Mr. Charlie Herbst was back on campus to help judge the contest too. He also made comment about how pleased he was to see the students’ work. Students were eager to go on Winter Break but more eager to know the results of the science contest. They will have to wait to unwrap their science awards as winners will be announced in January after the break. Congratulations to the students and to Southwestern’s hard-working, meticulous Science Department teachers.
