Read the handout. It is a copy of the first chapters from the book A River Sutra.
Answer the following questions:
- Why do you think the father of the monk wanted to have such a fabulous ceremony and party as his son became a monk?
- On Page 21 the father says two things are vital to success. He then gives examples of what he means on page 22. What are these vital things? How do you feel about this? Is he right? Why or why not?
- The monk’s father says on page 34: “We do more good through our trusts [money to be given to help others] every day than he [a monk] will do in a lifetime of being a monk. Without our work there would be no alms to allow him to live on charity.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why or why not?
- Why do you think the monk in the story renounced the world?
Write out your answers in paragraph form on notebook paper and hand in the first day after the holiday break.
