VACATION HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS for

A.J. Cabalu

First off,  you've done great work so far!  Enjoy your break; you've really deserved it.   (questions about your grades?  send emails to Mr. Cabalu at ajcabalu@southwestern.edu or @mrcabalu on Twitter after Tuesday, Nov. 22.)

Grammar 3
(you will need Focus on Grammar-pink and your notebook):
First, answer questions #1 and 2 on p. 141 in Chapter 9 of the text. Then read the article "What's Happening to CA$H?" on p. 141-142 in Focus on Grammar, pink book. Next, answer the questions 1-3 on page 142.

Next, read, examine and study the Grammar Presentation and Grammar Notes on p. 143-146.

Then complete the Unit 9 Study Guide in your notebooks. You can find the study guide at our class blog: http://southwesternesl3.blogspot.com/

Finally, complete all exercises in the pink book, p. 146-151 (sec 1-7), and all of the workbook exercises in Chapter 9, p. 67-74 (sec 1-8). There will be a test on this material on Thursday, Jan. 12, after we review your work.

Also, review the indefinite, definite and zero articles by reading all pages and completing ALL exercises of the "Three Little Words" packet, p.5-20.

Extra credit will be awarded to students who email to their teacher the exercises on p. 150, sec 5, of the pink book and p.66, sec 8 of the workbook. Good luck!

Reading 1
(you will need What a Life!, All American Stories and notebook):

1. First, create your own Reading journal in your notebook! As you are reading, make sure to use your journal to write down words that you don't understand, and define each word.
Next, from All-American Stories, read "The Lady, or the Tiger?" p. 71-79. Then as you read, use your reading journal to answer ALL of the questions on p. 80-82. We will do activities and a quiz when we return from Winter break.

2. Also, read about Pablo Picasso, Unit 9 in What a Life! (p.33-34) Define the seven Vocabulary words in your notebooks (list parts of speech) and answer all questions on pages 34 and 35. There will be a quiz on the day that we return, Jan. 10.

Writing 3
(you will need Ready to Write! and paper):

Email Mr. Cabalu a copy of your second draft by Wednesday, Dec. 21. The draft MUST BE in MS WORD format, or some such document format. DO NOT send essays as in-line text inside emails, please, as these will not be graded. You have been notified.

I will check these drafts and send them back to you for fixing. The final draft will then be due on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012.

In addition, I would like you to write in your journals bi-weekly, which means that you will write two journal entries per week. Practice using the articles a/an, the, and the zero article! Also, throw some quantifiers in there!

Conversation 1
Write an itinerary for your stay in the state capital Mr. Cabalu has chosen for you. The stay will last two days and two nights, and you will have a total of five hundred American dollars to spend. You will need to do internet research for this project. When we return to school during the second week of January, you will present your itineraries to the class. Make sure to pick specific places to visit, and detail the things you want to do. For example: Don't say: "9:00 A.M. - eat breakfast" Instead, say: "9:00 A.M. - have famous Walker Bros. apple pancake north of Chicago on Green Bay Rd."

Remember to consider these four things: 1) Hotel, 2) food, 3) attractions/fun, and 4) rental car.
