NEWS FOR PARENTS FROM SOUTHWESTERN ACADEMY
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2008

WE’RE SAVING PAPER with online news and monthly calendars – and hoping parents will read what’s happening at our campuses, and scroll down for activities and sports events on the monthly calendar!   The next month’s news and calendar will be posted about the 25th, and the calendar will be updated whenever changes are needed.  If you’re coming for a varsity sports event, it’s good to call for any schedule changes and for directions to “away” Games:

“FOLLOW THE SUN”  SOCCER and VOLLEYBALL TIME – SCHEDULES and SCORES at the
SAN MARINO SPORTS INFO HOTLINE: CALL 1-626-799-5010, then press '6'

STUDENTS OLD AND NEW are settling into classes smoothly, after our placement testing and scheduling on September 16th and the first classes the following day.  Clubs, varsity sports, and other activities have also begun.  If any subject seems too easy or too difficult for any student, our deans will work to change things.  Should you hear concerns from your boy or girl, please urge your student to talk with a dean right away.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT for parents and our teachers and staff will be Tuesday, September 30th, in Lincoln Hall.  Parents who live near our San Marino Campus are urged to attend.  Introductions will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m., so time will be available for parents to talk with their student’s teachers.

COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT on the following Tuesday, October 7th, starting at 7:00, also in Lincoln Hall, and required for 11th and 12th grade students to attend.  Some 10th graders and local parents also like to attend.  Our award-winning counseling booklet, “Getting In”, describes the process of selecting and applying to appropriate colleges, completing testing and essays, and finding financial aid as needed.

THE FIRST MONTHLY “BLAZER DAY” is on Wednesday, October 15th, when fall testing is held for grades 6-11.  This includes the PSAT – practice College Board testing for freshmen, sophomores and juniors.  Seniors who have already taken SAT’s will be visiting the Claremont Colleges that morning.

THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL DINNER AND SHOW of the new school year will be the same Wednesday, October 15th, at 6:00 p.m., when boys and girls from KOREA prepare foods from their country and present music and dance.  Commuting students and their parents are always welcome at these “International Nights,” but are asked to sign up in advance at the Student Office.

HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES are divided this year, with dinner, games, and a dance on Thursday the 30th, and costume dress-up on Friday the 31st.  Costumes will be judged for prizes as most creative, scariest, and most original, with a contest in morning assembly and a day to stay dress-up.

BOYS LIVING AT OUR SAN MARINO CAMPUS returned to find all
forty dorm rooms remodeled, with all-new furnishings, enhanced
electric and wi-fi service, and card-operated door locks.  The
extensive renovation and furnishings were funded by gifts from
alumni, friends, and parents like you through the Annual Fund,
and were accomplished by our director of operations, Toby Hooper,
with the help of our in-house maintenance staff and various con-
tractors.  The one- and two-bed rooms were also painted, re-
carpeted, and made larger through removal of built-in wardrobes
dating from the 1960s.  Biggest hit are the card-key system for
door locks, allowing dorm room access only for the two residents
and dorm supervisors.  “They’re better than my college dorm room”
is the comment from several Class of 2008 alumni visiting to see
how Southwestern’s new school year is opening.   Come see for
yourself, and feel the students’ pride in their surroundings.
