FRESHMAN YEAR (9TH GRADE)
  • English I
    Begin SAT preparation in language, composition, and literature. Language structure is studied in depth, emphasizing spelling and vocabulary. Popular fiction and frequent written papers are assigned. There are introductions to drama, exposition, nonfiction, poetry, and mythology.

  • Algebra I
    Studies basic math structure with emphasis on the real number system and on application of algebraic concepts and skills. Unity and structure is shown with self-discovery and computer work.

  • Earth Science
    An introductory lab course on the structure of the earth and its place in the universe. Emphasis on understanding landforms through field studies.

  • Western Civilization
    Surveying the rise of western culture to Rome, Renaissance, and Reformation.

  • Spanish I
    Traditional approach, using native-language teachers who stress reading, writing, conversation, and speech.

  • Physical Education and Sports
    Required daily, with team sports and individual lifetime sports skills. Intramural and interscholastic teams in volleyball, tennis, badminton, soccer, basketball, track, golf, cross-country, and baseball.

  • Electives
    Art, art history, computer literacy, contemporary history, creative writing, photography, world affairs, music, keyboarding, music appreciation, publications and yearbook, student government, drama, speech, honors chorale, chorus, chamber orchestra. Other electives and independent study courses may be arranged through a student's advisor as needed and desired.

  • Computer Literacy
    Is required of all students who are not proficient, and must be taken as soon as practical after enrollment. The class includes keyboard skills, basic computer concepts, and proficiency with word processing. Spreadsheets and databases are introduced. Computers are in all classrooms, with Internet. Students may take additional terms if needed to develop skills in programming or processing.
