SOPHOMORE YEAR (10TH GRADE)

English II
Combines language, composition, and literature. All grammar and spelling principles are reviewed before extensive composition work. Units are included of drama, non-fiction, exposition, speech, fiction, and poetry, with weekly reading assignments and critical reports. Independent thinking is stressed.

Geometry
Aims to develop an understanding of deductive and indirect proofs in mathematics, and to develop spatial conceptualization. The course is proof-oriented.

Biology
An ecological approach using BSCS materials. Students develop generalizations about interactions of physiological processes within individuals, then continuing through interrelations of populations, biological communities, and the world ecosystem. All learning is laboratory based, with a “living wall” ecosystem included in the classroom for student observations.

World Cultures and Geography
Surveys using literature from other countries to supplement a text, emphasizing politics, economics, geography, and sociology.

Spanish II
Continues speaking and writing skills and introduces some literature of the Hispanic world, with occasional conversational field trips.

Physical Education and Sports
Required daily, with team sports and individual lifetime sports skills. Intramural and interscholastic teams in volleyball, tennis, badminton, soccer, basketball, track, golf, cross-country, and baseball.
- Electives
Art, art history, computer literacy, contemporary history, creative writing, photography, world affairs, music, keyboarding, music appreciation, publications and yearbook, student government, drama, speech, honors chorale, chorus, chamber orchestra. Other electives and independent study courses may be arranged through a student's advisor as needed and desired.
